IB Middle Years Programme

This year, Desert Academy is a candidate school for the MYP, which means that we have submitted our application and are now in the implementation phase of the process of becoming a full-fledged, IB Middle Years School.  We plan on having our authorization visit some time this spring.  In all seventh through tenth grade classes, students will experience the Areas of Interaction:  Approaches to Learning, Community and Service, Health and Social Education, Human Ingenuity, and Environments.  The area that is the focus for the unit in any given class will be clearly identified, so that they can remember, for example, that while they may be discussing Environments in Science, they are also exploring how Environments ties to issues they are discussing in History.  Students will be assessed regularly using criterion-referenced assessment, which provides clear guidelines and feedback about what the learning goals are for assignments and how to achieve these goals.   Teachers will continue to develop curriculum in both grade level teams and departments, which allows for greater collaboration and cross-pollination of ideas.  We are so excited about what the MYP has done for our teaching, and we can’t wait to share that with you and our students this school year!  For more information on the Middle Years Programme, check out the MYP section of our website at http://desertacademy.org/academics/ib-programs/, or www.ibo.org.
