ANNOUNCEMENTS

KAUNE NEW CAMPUS ACQUISITION
We are pleased to announce that the New Mexico Board of Finance approved the SFPS District’s sale of Kaune school to Desert Academy on Tuesday, subject to a few minor legal clarifications. This action marks the final legal step in our acquisition of a new home for our school. We will initiate our due diligence period and anticipate closing will occur in time for us to begin classes at Kaune in the Fall.

In the next few days, we will announce the date for a meeting in which we will present our plans for the new campus to the Desert community.  We hope you will be able to attend.

There will be a considerable amount of effort required to facilitate the move, and we will be calling on our families to lend a hand during the summer months. For now, we want to thank the many Trustees, parents, staff and advisers who have made this exciting opportunity a reality!!
More details to follow.

HOST FAMILIES NEEDED FOR 2011-2012 FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS

Share your world with a high school foreign exchange student and make an overseas friend for life.
By opening up your heart and your home, you will be giving an exceptional young person the opportunity of a lifetime – to live with your family and experience firsthand the language, customs and culture of our country. There is no greater opportunity for bright, inquisitive teenagers eager to expand their knowledge and their worlds. In return, your ASSE/World Heritage exchange student will bring a fresh new outlook on life and a bit of his or her native country into your home. It is truly the meeting of two cultures – not as a tourist, but as a “family” – learning from each other and living together.

Desert Academy seeks host families for two 15 year old 10th graders:

Ya, from central China, plays the violin and piano and she loves swimming, badminton and reading;

Valentin, from southern Germany, plays the guitar and he loves volleyball, skiing, movies, acting and soccer.

They are eager to join our community and so are we! Please contact me ASAP!

NEW YORK CITY TRIP RE-CAP
The New York City Broadway Field Trip was a huge success.  We saw an outstanding production of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” with Daniel Radcliffe.  We spent most of Friday at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  It was such fun to see a classic British farce on the Broadway stage, “The Importance of Being Earnest” with acclaimed actor Brian Bedford in the role of Lady Bracknell.  Saturday morning we were honored to have a special architectural tour of the Guggenheim Museum arranged by Camilla Motta, Ariadne and Iona’s Mom.  Special thanks to Camilla for setting this up.  Her brother, Carlos, had a video exhibit in the museum’s special “Translations” sections.  And finally, we saw “War Horse” on its opening weekend at Lincoln Center.  It was the talk of the town and is sure to have a very long run just like it did in London.  It got rave reviews.  The life size horses were puppets, and each one was controlled by 3-4 people.  It was a moving and spectacular piece of theater that none of us will ever forget.

DESERT LEOS CLUB
30 NEW MEMBERS INDUCTED TO DESERT LEOS CLUB
On Wednesday, April 20th, at All-School Assembly, the officers of Santa Fe Host Lion’s Club International officiated the swearing-in of 30 new members to the Desert Leos Club during its 2nd annual induction ceremony. The school-based youth service and outreach club, sponsored by Lions Clubs International, leaped from 20 founding members last year to a robust 50 members this year. Members range in age from 12 to 18 years.
This year, the Desert Leos have taken on numerous service, fundraising and outreach projects locally and internationally. The club was mainly responsible for concessions sales during school home soccer and basketball games. In March, Leos organized and sponsored the Dance-A-Ton fundraiser at Desert during which students raised close to $2,000 for community service projects locally and afar.
At Spring Break, 15 Leos traveled to the Dominican Republic where they painted and beautified a pre-school for low-income families, and bottled and distributed free children’s medicine in two other impoverished communities.
Many Leos members who did not travel this year concentrated their service efforts closer to home; the club worked all year with neighboring Aspen Community Charter School in its United Way After-School Program where they tutored and mentored elementary-aged students. Recently, Leos and Aspen students came together to paint over Aspen’s graffiti-marred storage building; Leos purchased paints and materials, re-painted the building, and later assisted the children in creating a mural to adorn the freshly painted walls.
The induction ceremony acknowledged the hard-working Leos for their commitment to leadership, experience and opportunity through service and outreach, especially where these benefit children.

On Friday, August 29 we play in an ‘Individuals State Tournament’ at Sandia Prep. There will also be matches on Saturday if any of our players advance. Times of matches to be announced.

Finally, ON Wednesday, May 4, your Wildcat Tennis team goes to the TEAM STATE TOURNAMENT! Times and locations of matches to be announced.

DESERT LEOS & ASPEN GRAY WOLVES JOIN “PAWS”
The Desert Leos Club chose as a local community-building and service project to paint the graffiti-tagged storage shed belonging to our neighbor, Aspen Community Charter School, where the Leos have been volunteering at the After-School Program all year.
This project brings the Desert Leos and the Aspen kids another step closer to one another in a joint effort to beautify our neighborhood. On Thursday, the Leos painted over the graffiti with tinted primer paint. On Friday, 15 of the Aspen 2nd graders, who participate in their After-School Program, joined the Leos to paint a mural over the newly-painted building. The kids, aided by the Leos, traced their own and the Leos’ body outlines in chalk and then filled in their features and clothes with different colors. The resulting mural shows Aspen children and Desert Leos “holding hands” around the building.
The Desert Leos Dance-a-Thon fundraiser in March enabled them to purchase the paints and supplies for this community project, over $500 worth! Thanks to all who supported the club’s fundraising efforts!

THANK YOU PROJECT G.U.T.S. PARTICIPANTS
Thank you for the Project G.U.T.S members participation this past Saturday at the roundtable.  Students presented their current semester programs and then participated in awards and games.  Adam Melk and Sara Hartse were the only members able to attend at SFCC but we were happy to see them. Thanks again, students and parents for all of your support!

ATHLETIC NEWS & SCHEDULES

Wildcat tennis players are tearing up the courts — and coming up aces!
On April 5, Wildcat boys and girls swept 7 straight matches from District opponent Evangel Christian. Nick Keller, Max Zieler, Daisy Ottaviano and Juliana Pierce all won singles matches. Toby Burger, Nick Umprhrey, Daisy Ottaviano and Juliana Pierce all won a doubles match; Toby and Juliana won two doubles matches!

On April 11, our Lady Wildcats won 4 straight matches from St. Mike’s JV girls.  Lea Kolligs and Estrella Flores won their singles matches, then teamed up to win a doubles match. Daisy Ottaviano and Juliana Pierce won their doubles match.

On April 13, Wildcat boys and girls faced tough District opponent Waldorf.  Matches were won and matches were lost (though Desert gets the official District win because Waldorf has no girls on their team and therefore has to forfeit these matches). Forfeit aside, Lea Kolligs bested Waldorf’s #2 singles player (8-1), Nick Keller bested their #4 singles player (8-5) and Daisy Ottaviano and Elliot Palestine won their doubles match  (8-6).  Other exciting matches were played by Skylar Deckoff-Jones, Toby Burger, Nick Umphrey, Estrella Flores, Sean Colin-Ellerin and Juliana Pierce. Juliana’s match resulted in an exciting 8-8 tie, followed by a 7-point tiebreaker she lost by a hair (8-6).

On Friday, April 15, the Wildcats travel to Evangel Christian for a return match. Match time is 1PM; players will be back in Santa Fe at 4PM.

District and State Tournaments coming up in May — watch your e-news for details!  And come out and support Wildcat tennis!!!

OUR SHAKLEE PARTNERSHIP
We are partnering with Shaklee, through the Assistance Dogs of the West, to offer Desert families and their friends the Shaklee product line.  Pioneering in the green movement, Shaklee products are super concentrated (why would you pay for watered down cleaners?) and easy on your home and the environment.  Desert Academy is eliminating more toxic cleaning products and moving toward Shaklee products for our building.  It’s very easy – go to desertacademy.org.  At the bottom of the first page, click on “Shop for our cause.”  Then on that page, click on “Shop for our cause” again and you’ll be on our Shaklee site.  When you shop, you can either set up your own membership, which is free until May 20, or purchase on the Desert number – BL12332.  You shouldn’t even have to put the number in as it will be there automatically.  Please share this with your business partners, your clients, your family and your friends.  Desert Academy receives 10-20% of the sales of all products.  Thanks for your support!

GOLF COMMITTEE IN FULL SWING!

Event: Thursday, September 15, 2011 Las Campanas
Our 8th Annual Golf Classic is looking for committee members, business sponsors and PLAYERS!  If you have been looking for a way to get involved with Desert Academy, this is a great one.  You don’t have to be a golfer and we don’t have too many meetings.  Of course, we’ll be looking for volunteers next fall so keep that in mind.  It’s a really fun day for all involved.  The format (4 person scramble) means that you don’t have to be a great golfer to participate.  Please call Robin Stumbo, third year chair, 470-9409 for more information and to join the committee.

Foreign Exchange Program

Host an exchange student!

When you host a foreign exchange student, your family will embark on an unforgettable cultural adventure.

By opening up your heart and your home, you will be giving an exceptional young person the opportunity of a lifetime – to live with your family and experience firsthand the language, customs and culture of our country.
There is no greater opportunity for bright, inquisitive teenagers eager to expand their knowledge and their worlds. In return, your exchange student will bring a fresh new outlook on life and a bit of his or her native country into your home. It is truly the meeting of two cultures.

Desert Academy seeks Host Families for 2011-2012. We are currently expecting an 11th grade student from Italy, Alessia, who loves cats, basketball, swimming, climbing and music. In her words: I’m really excited about this new experience. I’ve already been an exchange student in Spain and Holland. I loved them both experiences.

Sunday, April 3 at 2:00 at Susan Hart’s home 232 Artist Rd.
Don’t miss the fun, crafty afternoon we have planned! Susan Hart is leading a workshop to show people how to make really clever and personal greeting cards.  So, come and visit with Desert Academy parents and others while you are learning something new.  Susan will provide all the materials.  Snack will be served.  This is one of the Desert Academy parties that we have initiated this year; you’ll hear about more as time goes on.  Cost for the card making workshop is $30 (all proceeds go to Desert) and you may pay at the door. Bring your friends! Email Susan at swh711@gmail.com or call 982-6494 if you have any questions.

LIBRARY PARENT GROUP
We are currently in the process of forming a parent library group. The first meeting will be Wednesday, April 6 at 2:00 pm. Please plan to join us if you are interested in helping us with our library. As most of you know, Borders by Sanbusco is having its going-out-of-business sale.  The teachers have listed some books that they would like to see in the new Desert Library.  Parents, if you already have a copy that you are willing to donate to the library, or if you are willing to purchase a copy from the Borders sale, it would be greatly appreciated by both teachers and students next school year!
