WILDCAT TENNIS TEAM RUNNER-UPS AT STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!
The Wildcat Tennis Team finished their season in exciting fashion. Districted for the first time, the Wildcats were selected as the #1 seed (Small School District) in the New Mexico State Tournament. On Friday, May 6 the Wildcats played Waldorf in the semi-finals. The matches were held at the Jerry Cline Tennis Club in Albuquerque. Six matches were played; 2 boys and 2 girls singles, and 1 boys and 1 girls doubles. Our girls won their three matches by forfeit (Waldorf has an all-boys team), and our doubles team of Toby Burger and Nick Umphrey won their match to give the Wildcats an overall 4-2 win. Nick Keller played #1 boys singles and Elliot Palestine played #2 boys singles in the semi-finals. Although both lost, they played exciting matches. Nick took Waldorf’s #1 player (Senior Tony Burling) to a tie-breaker in the second and deciding set.
On Saturday, the Wildcats returned to Jerry Cline to face Rehoboth for the State Small School District Championship. The match between the two teams couldn’t have been more exciting. Desert and Rehoboth had split their matches in their previous two District meetings. In the State Finals, Desert girls Lea Kolligs and Estrella Flores swept their individual singles matches and then went on to win their doubles match. This completed an undefeated season for the Lady Wildcats. Our boys — Sean Colin-Ellerin, Toby Burger, and Nick Umphrey – played tough matches, but came out on the losing side. This left the contest at a 3-3 draw. The format calls for a mixed doubles match to decide the championship. Lea Kolligs and Nick Umphrey took on the #1 boy and #1 girl from Rehoboth; in a second set tie-breaker, Rehoboth edged out the win. What excitement! What fun.
At the Spring Sports banquet this Friday evening, the Wildcat Tennis Team will receive its State Championship Runner-Up Trophy as well as individual letters and pins. What an exciting beginning for Desert tennis. With a young team, full of returning players, we look forward to an exciting, competitive and fun-filled season next year. Support Wildcat tennis!!!
